Christie First to Achieve Full DCI Compliance - Wokingham, UK – (21st June, 2010) – Christie®, the leader in digital cinema projection technologies, announced that it is the first digital cinema projector manufacturer to pass the full range of tests required by the Compliance Test Plan (CTP) for the DCI Digital Cinema System Specification (DCSS), including all procedural and design review aspects. The tests were completed by HYPERLINK "http://www.cinecert.com/" CineCert, LLC, a technology development and consulting firm that is the only organization in North America licensed by HYPERLINK "http://www.dcimovies.com/" Digital Cinema Initiatives, LLC (DCI) to administer the CTP.
“We are very pleased to confirm that the Christie CP2220, featuring Texas Instruments’ Series 2 DLP Cinema® technology, has passed all the requirements of the CTP,” said John Hurst, CTO of CineCert. “We are dedicated to helping the exhibition community understand all of the technical requirements for passing the CTP and helping manufacturers get through the testing process quickly and efficiently.”
Hollywood studios require exhibitors worldwide to install DCI compliant projectors in their theatres; and passing the CTP is the only approved path to DCI compliance. Christie’s latest generation projector, the Christie CP2220 – from the Christie Solaria Series of 4K-ready projectors – was tested by CineCert, and their tests confirmed that the projector meets the highest level of technical performance, interoperability, and rigorous content security requirements as specified by DCI’s Compliance Test Plan.
“With over 12,000 digital cinema projectors installed worldwide, Christie helps set the standards for quality, reliability and performance,” said Brian Claypool, Senior Product Manager, Entertainment Solutions. “Now that CineCert has confirmed the Christie CP2220 meets the CTP’s requirements, exhibitors have another level of assurance about our commitment to providing them with industry-leading products and services.”
Recognized as “the future of 4K,” the Christie CP2220 projector is built on the proven, highly reliable 1.2” DLP Cinema chip, the only one to offer a 4K upgrade path using Christie’s easy “15 minutes to 4K” process. Smaller than other 1.2” DLP Cinema-based projectors, the Christie CP2220 provides exceptional installation flexibility with a motorized lens option that is the fastest and most accurate available. With more light output than any mid power projector on the market, the CP2220 also offers the lowest cost of operation.
“With more than 80 years in the industry, Christie has earned the trust of the exhibition community by consistently providing products of the highest quality and reliability. This new digital cinema landmark – meeting the strictest requirements for DCI compliance – is further proof of Christie’s commitment to the market,” said Craig Sholder, Vice President, Business Development and Cinema Solutions at Christie.

Christie Surpasses 12,000 Digital Cinema
Installation Milestone
- Wokingham, UK - (21st June, 2010) - Christie®, the leader in digital cinema
projection technologies, announced that it has shipped and installed more than
12,000 digital cinema projectors worldwide, achieving a new industry milestone and strengthening its leadership with a 65% share of the total global market. The accomplishment includes the installation of more than 2,000 DCI-compliant Christie
SolariaT Series 4K-ready projectors. Christie was also the first manufacturer to surpass the 5,000 digital cinema milestone in the Fall of 2008 and the 7,500 installation mark early in 2009.
With 3D movies supercharging ticket sales and spurring demand for digital systems around the world, Christie has ramped up production of the Solaria Series projectors. These include the Christie CP2220 and Christie CP2230, which feature Texas Instruments' (TI) (NYSE: TXN) next generation Series 2 DLP Cinema® technology and are based on the 1.2" DLP Cinema chip platform. This is the only chip upgradeable to 4K resolution - a simple, 15 minute process on Christie projectors.
The world is going digital and Christie is committed to leading the charge," said Jack Kline, President and COO, Christie USA. "From our first, ground-breaking roll-out of 4,000 digital cinema projectors that jump-started the digital cinema revolution, Christie has been a major force in every corner of the world, developing innovative strategies, products and services that are guiding the industry into the digital age."
To address growing demands, Christie announced a new manufacturing facility in China, increased R&D, expanded its base of skilled staff, stocked up on long lead components to ensure sufficient parts in the months ahead, and strengthened its technical training initiatives. At the same time, it has boosted its Christie Managed Services programs in North America to provide the widest range of technical support for resellers and exhibitors making the switch to digital.
"We are in high gear, working with resellers and exhibitors to quickly digitize screens and take advantage of the new crop of 3D movies arriving in theaters," commented Craig Sholder, Christie's Vice-President of Entertainment Solutions. "We are also pleased to report that Christie's phenomenal success in North America, where it holds more than 70% of the market, is now being echoed in Central and South America, where orders for digital projectors have jumped appreciably. Christie is the overwhelming projector of choice because exhibitors recognize our Series 2 projectors offer the best light efficiency and lowest cost of operation."
In Europe, Christie continues to hold a commanding 54% market share. Over the last five years, the leading European, Middle Eastern and African exhibitors have selected and installed Christie digital cinema projectors - including Arts Alliance Digital Cinema (AADC) through the roll-out of the digital screen network for the UK Film Council. This marked the world's first digital cinema deployment on a large scale.
"In 2005, the digital era was relatively new and there were only a handful of digital cinema installations in the entire world," comments Dale Miller, Vice-President, Christie EMEA. "Since then, we have seen exciting growth opportunities globally and notably in the EMEA region. Close to 3,000 Christie digital cinema projectors are now in the European market place, with thousands more contracted to be installed in the near future. Our success is a direct reflection of the loyalty and support of our customers who believe in Christie and the viability of this exciting industry."
A recent triumph for Christie was its framework purchasing agreement for 300 Christie Solaria Series projectors with FTT, its German integration and service partner. Christie's partnership with FTT dates back to more than six years, when the two companies launched one of the first major digital cinema roll-outs in Europe. Such long-term relationships are a hallmark of Christie's market leadership, reflecting the company's full commitment to helping industry partners succeed.
Christie's explosive growth in the Asia Pacific region, where sales have climbed by more than 400% in the past year, has also contributed significantly to its record number of installations. A major development was its agreement with DCK, the joint-venture company of CJ CGV and Lotte Cinema in South Korea, which selected Christie as the primary digital cinema projector provider for DCK's Virtual Print Fee (VPF) deal with major Hollywood studios. The partnership launched South Korea's largest digital cinema deployment to date and introduced a new era in content distribution for the country. The first phase of the agreement utilized 500 Christie CP2000 Series projectors; the current and second phase features at least 500 of the new Christie Solaria 4K-ready DLP Cinema projectors, of which nearly 100 have already been shipped and installed.
Christie's recent success with China Film Group garnered a further 375 Solaria series projectors solidifying its position as the projector of choice for China's power players China Film Group, Shanghai Film Group, Time Antaeus, Wanda Cinemas and Lianzhong Cinemas.
Lin Yu, Vice-President, Christie Asia Pacific, commented, "Christie's accomplishments in the Asia Pacific region are a testament to the company's global vision. It reflects the company's unique ability to respond quickly to the needs of a changing market. In addition to our dominance in the Asia Pacific region, Christie's new manufacturing facility in China, will further strengthen our presence in this region and enhance our manufacturing capabilities globally." She added: "This summer, Christie Solaria Series digital cinema projectors will be coming off the assembly line to meet continued, worldwide demand."

Civolution Launches Certification Program for NexGuard Digital Cinema Watermarking - Eindhoven June 17th, 2010 – Civolution, the leading provider of technology and solutions for identifying, managing, and monetizing media content, introduced a formal validation program for its NexGuard forensic marking technology used in digital cinema systems.
The validation tools and declaration of conformity, to evidence the validation of the watermarking technology core function, entitle Civolution’s partners (manufacturers of digital cinema equipment, which comply with the requirements of the Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI, www.dcimovies.com)) to verify and confirm activation and operation of the watermarking technology, and correct embedding upon in-theatre projection.
‘’Forensic marking is essential to help identify the source of illicit in-theatre recording of motion pictures,’’ says Michael Karagosian of MKPE Consulting. ‘’This new validation process is an important step in ensuring that fully functional and effective marking is taking place in digital cinema equipment. When implemented in accordance with the DCI specification, digital cinema forensic marking provides seamless content tracking for cinema owners and movie studios, beyond that available today with film prints.’’
‘’Along with the certification procedure, Civolution provides a quality check (QC) software tool that allows easy checking of the NexGuard - Digital Cinema watermarking behaviour implemented in a vendor’s server or media block,’’ explains Jean-Michel Masson, Senior Vice President, Watermarking Operations, Civolution. ‘’The new procedure will facilitate product validation and DCI certification for all of our partners and provides transparency to the industry.’’
The goal is to ensure that every Digital Cinema server or Media Block software release includes the DCI-compliant watermarking function in order to satisfy movie studios expectations and meet one mandatory component of the DCI specification compliance testing for digital cinema equipment. Members of the Inter-Society Digital Cinema Forum (ISDCF, www.isdcf.com) have approved and agreed upon the new tools and procedures.
Civolution’s watermarking technology has already been deployed in volume worldwide by leading server and media block manufacturers. Once media block and digital cinema server manufacturers have completed the certification process, and comply with watermarking licensing terms, Civolution will publish on its website a listing of each digital cinema server model and version with confirmed declarations of conformity.
The NexGuard - Digital Cinema watermarking technology has been in operation in thousands of theatres since the worldwide introduction of digital technology in 2006, and is compatible with 2K, 4K, 2D and 3D systems. Watermarking upon projection enables the identification of the theatre screen and the time of projection, a condition made mandatory by the movie studios that were instrumental in establishing DCI specifications. DCI specifications ensure a uniform, high level of technical performance, along with reliability and quality control.
